I’m Giorgio Savona, a freelance cameraman and director of photography based in Paris. My work moves between two worlds: broadcast news for international networks and creative documentary filmmaking driven by personal stories and real lives on the ground.
I came to cinema from an unusual path. After years as a researcher and professor of physics at European universities, I left science in 2011 to join Getty Images in New York as a photojournalist. My visual storytelling earned international recognition, including the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and the LUMIX Multimedia Award. From there I moved behind the camera, first as an assistant on feature films, then as a cameraman and director of photography in my own right.
On the broadcast side, I’ve spent over a decade covering news and current affairs for CNN, HBO, Bloomberg, France 24, ZDF, La Sexta, Aragon TV and the Olympic Channel, working across France, Spain and Italy. In 2024 I covered the Paris Olympics as a cameraman. My broadcast work ranges from political coverage and interviews with world leaders to breaking news for international audiences.
On the documentary side, I work in creative documentary and field documentary, combining a strong sense of observation with a cinematic visual language shaped by real locations, lived situations and long-form human stories. My most recent film as director of photography, co-writer and co-producer is A Little Gray Wolf Will Come, directed by Zhanna Agalakova. The film premiered in competition at Sheffield DocFest 2025 and has since screened at other international festivals. Earlier credits include Party Boi Black Diamonds as DP and Brighton 4th as assistant camera, a film that won Best International Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Festival .
My cinematography blends realism and lyricism, capturing both the intimacy of human lives and the cinematic essence of their environments. I am especially drawn to stories of marginalisation, personal narratives, and documentaries developed close to the people and places they portray.
